Four-Run Ninth Gives Baseball Team 12-8 Victory at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – The American International College baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth to break an 8-8 tie and record a 12-8 victory at the College of Saint Rose Friday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Southwest Division contest.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 19-19 for the season, 10-15 in the NE-10 and 7-12 in division games, while the Golden Knights fell to 10-37 overall, 7-20 in the NE-10 and 6-13 in divisional games. The two teams will meet again Sunday for a Northeast-10 Southwest Division doubleheader at Saint Rose starting at noon to close out the 2013 season.

AIC had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the nine and went ahead for good on sophomore first baseman Mike Coyne's single to right and then got two more runs two batters later on sophomore right fielder David Kerlejza's single to deep second for the 12-8 final. Senior closer Geoff McCowat then got senior second baseman Kyle Charron to fly out to right and freshman third baseman Chad Adams to hit into a game-ending double play in the bottom half of the frame.

McCowat entered the game in relief of senior Tim Bailey, who left the game with runners on second and third, two outs and an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Junior right fielder Brian Maynard then came home from third on a sacrifice fly and senior catcher A.J. Capone scored on an error to tie the game at 8-8

The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior center fielder Dave Clark scored from third on junior third baseman Cam MacDonald's ground out to second. AIC got two more runs in the second on freshman shortstop Eddie Ritch's two-RBI bases-loaded single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead.

Junior left fielder Dan Asselin blasted a lead-off solo homer to left to give AIC a 4-1 lead in the top of the third and his double to left center drove in a pair of runs in the top of the fourth gave the Yellow Jackets a 6-3 advantage.

Saint Rose then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on RBI-singles from shortstop Joseph Carcone and designated hitter Caleb Gleason and an error by Asselin. The Yellow Jackets quickly regained the lead on Kerlejza's lead-off solo shot to left in the top of the fifth, and then opened an 8-6 advantage on MacDonald's RBI-single to center.

McCowat improved his record to 4-0 for the season after allowing just one hit with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief. Junior Adam DeFruscio fell to 1-2 after allowing three runs on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning.

Kerlejza finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored for AIC, while Asselin finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Coyne was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Ritch went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run.
