SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning of the second game to earn a 16-4 victory over Adelphi University to split a Northeast-10 doubleheader at AIC Park. The Yellow Jackets fell in game one 3-0. AIC improved to 14-16 overall and 5-12 in the conference, while the Panthers drop to 18-18-1 overall and 9-11 in the NE-10.
In game one, the contest remained scoreless until the 5
th inning when Adelphi scored two runs to earn a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Donato Signore (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a homerun over the right center field, while senior Vinny Gaetano (Utica, N.Y.) hit an RBI double down the left field line. Gaetano hit a sacrifice fly in the9th inning to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Graduate student Chris Pabisch (Dix Hills, N.Y.) earned the win for Adelphi throwing six innings and allowing six hits and striking out six batters, while senior Dillon McNamara (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the save throwing 1.2 innings and allowing one hit and four striking out four. Senior
Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss throwing eight innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two.
In game two, AIC got the bats moving in the first inning scoring eight runs to earn an 8-0 lead. Junior
Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) started with a triple to right center to plate three teammates, while freshman
Zach Kane (New London, Conn.) followed with an RBI triple to right center. Junior
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) plated three Yellow Jackets on double down the right field lone. Sophomore
Mike Coyne hit an RBI triple to center field, while Clark hit an RBI single to shortstop.
In the second inning AIC extended the lead to 10-0 when junior
Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) hit an RBI double down the right field fence, while freshman
David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) hit an RBI single to right field.
Adelphi got on the board in the fifth inning when junior Chad Houghton (Plymouth, Mass.) hit an RBI single through the right side to make it a 12-1 contest. The Yellow Jackets would continue on to score four more runs to earn a 16-4 victory over the Panthers.
Kerlejza was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Asselin was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Clark was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs.
Freshman
Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) earned the win for AIC moving his record to 2-3 overall, throwing seven innings and allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five. Senior Jeff Andersen (Valley Stream, N.Y.) took the loss for Adelphi throwing .1 of an inning and allowing seven runs on four hits.
AIC will host Adelphi again tomorrow for a 12 p.m. Northeast-10 contest at AIC Park.
