Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Freshmen shine in AIC hockey's 5-4 loss to Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich.-Freshman goalkeeper Ty Reichenbach (Billings, Mont.) made 42 saves, and his classmate, left wing Sean Federow (Niagara Falls, Ont), scored his first goal as a Yellow Jacket, but the AIC ice hockey team fell by a 5-4 score to the Michigan State Spartans tonight.

The loss drops AIC to 1-2-0 on the year, while MSU improves to 2-3-0 on the season.

The Spartans came out firing in the first ten minutes and netted two goals, as sophomore forward Michael Ferrantino (Plymouth, Mich.) banged in a rebound at 4:46 for his second and then at 9:33 freshman forward J.T. Stenglein (Greece, N.Y.) fired home a shot on the power play for his first of the campaign.

AIC would steal a goal late in the period, however; rookie right wing Mike Dietrich (Southampton, N.J.) found sophomore left wing Chris Porter (Stoufville, Ont.), who in turn dished to the captain, senior center Blake Peake (Lethbridge, Alb.) behind the net. From the corner, Peake threw the puck off the back of sophomore goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand (Butler, Pa.) for his second of the year at 19:14.

The second frame and early third period as well all went the Spartans way, as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Freshman forward Villiam Haag (Gothenburg, Sweden) fired a seeing-eye shot into the top left corner at 3:44 of the second for his first goal of the year, then, shorthanded, senior forward Lee Reimer (Landmark, Man.) pounded home a rebound for his first of the year at 10:22; in the final frame, MSU's captain, senior forward Greg Wolfe (Canton, Mich.) struck for his fourth at 5:32.

The Yellow Jackets might have folded, but instead they demonstrated great resiliency. Taking advantage of a hitting after the whistle penalty, junior center Alexander MacMillan (Calgary, Alb.) made a pass to freshman right wing David Norris (Calgary, Alb.), who slid the puck into the crease for Federow to finish at 8:44.

Two and a half minutes later, AIC won an offensive zone faceoff and scored, as junior center Brandon Fagerheim (Calgary, Alb.) pulled the puck back for junior defenseman Jake Williams (Duluth, Minn.) for a one-timer that rocketed home for his first of the year at 11:16.

The Yellow Jackets tallied one more late with the keeper pulled and two Spartans in the box, as sophomore defenseman Brandon Lubin (Commerce Township, Mich.) made a pass to senior left wing Jon Puskar (Canton, Mich.), who then found MacMillan in front for his first of the year at 19:54, but they could not get a tying goal in the final six seconds.

Reichenbach took the loss to fall to 1-1-0 on the campaign, but played brilliantly, turning back 42 shots in the contest and helping AIC to hold the Spartans to just 1 for 5 on the PP; Hildebrand improved to 2-2-0 with 18 saves in the contest.

AIC and MSU play again on Sunday at 1:07 p.m. at Munn Arena.
