WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College hockey team had four different scorers in the Yellow Jackets 4-1 win over Sacred Heart Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period in which both teams managed ten shots, the Yellow Jackets posted three goals in the second frame, working efficiently to tally those on just eight shots and holding the Pioneers to three.
The scoring began just 0:39 into the period on a beautiful passing play, as freshman right wing
Mike Dietrich (Southampton, N.J.) made a pass to junior center
Brandon Fagerheim (Calgary, Alb.), who dropped the puck to the point for sophomore defenseman
Brandon Lubin (Commerce Township, Mich.), who one timed the puck home for his first collegiate goal.
Then, off the draw in the offensive zone on the power play, Fagerheim dished the puck back to freshman right wing
David Norris (Calgary, Alb.), who scored his first as a Yellow Jacket at 14:00.
Finally, at 18:34, the Yellow Jackets struck again, as they caught Sacred Heart scrambling in their own zone, and senior defenseman
Whitney Olsen (Eagan, Minn.) completed a pass to the right side to senior center
Blake Peake (Lethbridge, Alb.), who then dished across to a wide open sophomore left wing
Chris Porter (Stoufville, Ont.), who buried a one-timer for his first on the year.
Sacred Heart started the third on the power play, and took advantage, striking at the 0:44 mark of the final stanza on a stuff play at the right side that was finished by left wing Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, Mo.).
However, despite taking another penalty on the play, it was AIC who next scored, as junior center
Matt Cassidy (London, Ont.) dished a perfect diagonal pass to send in junior right wing
Nathan Sliwinski (Castle Rock, Colo.) on a breakaway, which he scored on with a nifty forehand-backhand move that found the five hole at 2:29 for his first of the year.
In goal, freshman
Ty Reichenbach (Billings, Mont.) was stellar, earning his first win in his first appearance with 20 saves on 21 shots; sophomore Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) also made 20 saves, dropping to 2-2-0 on the season.
With the win AIC improves to 1-1-0 and 1-0-0 in Atlantic Hockey, while with the loss the Pioneers fall to 2-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. The Jackets next head to Michigan State University for a weekend doubleheader with the Spartans.
