SETTING THE SCENE: The American International College men's ice hockey team will face off with Connecticut in a weekend home and home series that will get under way Friday night in Storrs before concluding at the Olympia Ice Center Saturday. The puck will drop for both contests at 7:05 p.m.
ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets entered the weekend with an overall record of 5-13-3 for the season and a 2-10-3 mark against Atlantic Hockey foes this season after splitting a weekend set with Robert Morris, which was receiving voted in the USCHO.com poll. AIC won the series opener 4-1 Friday night to snap a five-game slide before being edged 5-4 on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward
Adam Pleskach leads the team in scoring with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points, while junior forward
Blake Peake is second on the team in scoring with five goals and nine assists for 14 points. Junior forward
Jon Puskar is third on the team in scoring with six goals and six assists for 12 points. Senior goalie
Ben Meisner is 4-11-3 with 633 saves.
WEEKLY HONORS: Peake, Pleskach and senior forward
Richard Leitner each earned a spot on the Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll for their respective performances against the Colonials last weekend. Both Peake and Pleskach had two goals and one assist in Friday's victory over Robert Morris, while Leitner had one goal and one assist for the weekend.
PLESKACH REACHES MILESTONES: Senior forward
Adam Pleskach scored his 50th career goal, tallied his 50th career assist, and registered his 100th career point in AIC's 4-1 win over Robert Morris this past Friday. He now has 51 career goals and 50 career assists for 101 career points. He is just the second Yellow Jacket in the Division I era of the program to reach 100 career points. MEISNER EYEING AHA RECORD, NCAA TOP-25: Senior goalie
Ben Meisner is currently on pace to finish as the all-time Atlantic Hockey saves leader and place among the NCAA's all-time save leaders. He entered the weekend with an AIC record 3,208 career saves, and needs 236 to tie Western Michigan's Riley Gill for 25th on the NCAA's all-time Division I list. Gill stopped 3,444 shots on goal from 2007-10. Meisner is 152 behind the current Atlantic Hockey record of 3,360 was set by Mercyhurst's Ryan Zapolski from 2007-11. UConn senior Garrett Bartus is making a similar push and entered the weekend with 3,269 career saves.
ABOUT CONNECTICUT: The Huskies entered the weekend with an overall record of 9-11-2 overall and are 6-8-1 in Atlantic Hockey contests. UConn is coming off a 2-1 loss at No. 2 Quinnipiac Tuesday night, an game that nearly saw the Huskies pull off the upset. Junior forward Billy Latta scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:06 left in the second period, and the score remained that way until the Bobcats scored on the power play with 4:13 left in the game. Senior goaltender Matt Grogan recorded 48 saves between the pipes for the Huskies, who were out shot 50-22 in the game. Senior forward Sean Ambrosie leads the team in scoring with six goals and 12 assists for 18 points, while junior forward Jordan Sims is second on the squad with six goals and nine assists for 15 points. Junior forward Brant Harris has six goals and six assists for 12 points, and sophomore forward Trevor Gerling has a team-best seven goals with four assists for 11 points. Bartus is 5-9-1 with a 2.70 goals against average and a .917 save percentage, while Grogan is 4-2-1 with a 2.17 goals against average and a .936 save percentage. The two have split time in net over the last seven games.
LAST MEETING: Trevor Gerling and Brant Harris scored two goals each to help power UConn to a 7-2 win over AIC in the opening round of the 2012 Toyota UConn Hockey Classic. Senior forward
Richard Leitner scored a career-high two goals in that game for the Yellow Jackets. Matt Grogan registered 31 saves in net for the Huskies, while Meisner had 21 stops in 45:14 for AIC. Junior goalie
Ryan Kerpan stopped all 11 shots on goal he faced in the final 14:46 for the Yellow Jackets.
ABOUT THE SERIES: UConn leads the all-time series with AIC by a mark of 49-36-10. The Huskies have dominated the Yellow Jackets since AIC won a 4-1 decision at the Olympia December 4, 2007, going 11-0-2. The two teams battled to a pair of ties at the Olympia Ice Center last season before UConn won a 5-3 decision in Storrs to win the season series.
NEXT UP: AIC will travel to Air Force for a weekend set next weekend for a pair of 9:05 p.m. (Eastern) Atlantic Hockey games. The Yellow Jackets will return to the Olympia Ice Center February 9 for the second half of a home-and-home series with Army, which will host AIC February 8. Both games against the Black Knights will get under way at 7:05 p.m.
