SETTING THE SCENE: The American International College men's ice hockey team travels to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey weekend series. The puck will drop both nights at 9:05 p.m. (EST) at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets entered the weekend with an overall record of 5-14-4 for the season and a 2-11-4 mark against Atlantic Hockey for this season after they went 0-1-1 this past weekend against the University of Connecticut in a home-and-home series. The Yellow Jackets dropped a 3-1 decision in Storrs on Friday night, before earning a 1-1 tie on Saturday at the Olympia Ice Center. Senior forward
Adam Pleskach leads the team in scoring with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points, while junior forward
Blake Peake is second on the team in scoring with five goals and nine assists for 14 points. Junior forward
Jon Puskar is third on the team in scoring with six goals and seven assists for 13 points. Senior goalie
Ben Meisner is 4-12-4 with 717 saves.
MEISNER EYEING AHA RECORD, NCAA TOP-25: Senior goalie
Ben Meisner is currently on pace to finish as the all-time Atlantic Hockey saves leader and place among the NCAA's all-time save leaders. He enters the weekend with an AIC record 3,292 career saves, and needs 152 to tie Western Michigan's Riley Gill for 25th on the NCAA's all-time Division I list. Gill stopped 3,444 shots on goal from 2007-10. Meisner is 68 behind the current Atlantic Hockey record of 3,360 set by Mercyhurst's Ryan Zapolski from 2007-11. UConn senior Garrett Bartus is making a similar push and entered the weekend with 3,269 career saves.
ABOUT AIR FORCE: The Falcons entered the weekend with an overall record of 11-9-5 overall and are 9-5-3 in Atlantic Hockey contests. Air Force recently swept Robert Morris in a weekend series, earning a 2-0 shut out on Friday night before earning a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Kyle DeLaurell (10 goals, 12 assists) and Cole Gunner (six goals, 16 assists) lead the Falcons with 22 points each. Tony Thomas is second on the team with seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points, closely followed by Stephen Carew with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points. Jason Torf is 11-9-5 in net for Air Force with 715 saves and a 2.41 goals against average.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Air Force leads the all-time series with AIC by a mark of 18-1-1. The Falcons have dominated the Yellow Jackets since AIC won a 5-3 decision at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The two teams battled to a 1-1 split in Colorado Springs last year.
NEXT UP: AIC will have a home-and-home Atlantic Hockey series against Army next weekend. The Yellow Jackets will travel to West Point, N.Y. on February 8th for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop. AIC will host the Black Knights on Saturday Feb. 9th at the Olympia Ice center for a 3:05 p.m. contest.
