Football Team Wins Shootout at Merrimack, 49-34

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The American International College football team racked up 618 yards of total offense as it recorded a 49-34 Northeast-10 victory at Merrimack College Saturday afternoon. Junior running back Terrell Williams (Hempstead, N.Y.) 259 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets.

AIC evened its record at 1-1 for the season, while the Warriors fell to 1-2 for the season. It was the conference-opener for both teams. The 1,185 combined total yards of offense between the two teams are a Northeast-10 record.

Williams carried the ball 28 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns while pulling in two catches for an additional 22 yards and one score. Junior running back Bryant Fitzgerald (Highland Park, N.J.) had three carries for 68 yards and one score.

Sophomore quarterback Kevin Arduino (Cornwall, N.Y.) completed 17-of-27 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore wide receiver Maurice Easterling (Yonkers, N.Y.) had a 17-yard touchdown reception. Junior wide receiver Matt Brown (Kingston, R.I.) had five catches for 49 yards, while senior Stephan Benjamin (Rosedale, N.Y.) had four catches for 44 yards.

Merrimack senior quarterback Joe Clancy (Newburyport, Mass.) completed 50-of-81 passes for 536 yards and three touchdowns and had an additional score on the ground. Senior wide receiver Isaiah Voegeli (Hyannis, Mass.) had nine catches for 169 yards and one TD, while senior tight end Steve Serwon (Amesbury, Mass.) pulled in 12 receptions for 104 yards and one score.

Sophomore linebacker Jaquawne Simpkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had a game-high 13 tackles (five solo) with one sack to lead the AIC defense, while freshman linebacker Demetrius Steed (Boston, Mass.) had 11 tackles (five solo) with 1.5 tackles for loss and freshman defensive back Mike Ford (Sammimish, Wash.) had 10 tackles (three solo). Sophomore linebacker Joel Bowen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had nine tackles (two solo), while senior defensive back Markel Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had seven tackles (four solo) and one interception.

Junior linebacker Jimmy Holland (Billerica, Mass.) registered 11 tackles (six solo) with three tackles for loss for the Warriors, while senior defensive back Artis Holt (Baltimore, Md.) and junior linebacker Ervin Johnson (Bradenton, Fla.) each had 10 tackles (six solo) with one tackle for loss.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 13-8 following a 51-yard scoring pass from Clancy to Voegeli with 26 seconds left in the first quarter before Williams scored back-to-back touchdowns for AIC to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good. AIC regained the lead on his 16-yard score midway through the second quarter and his one-yard score with 3:35 left in the first half gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-13 lead.

Shane Ferguson () pulled in an 11-yard scoring pass from Clancy to close the first half scoring, giving AIC a 21-19 lead at the break. Williams then opened the second half scoring when he broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter and Fitzgerald added a 49-yard score 4:36 later that gave the Yellow Jackets a 33-19 advantage.

The two teams traded scores from there and the Warriors pulled back within seven as Serwon's five-yard TD reception made it 41-34 in favor of AIC 4:10 into the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets answered on their ensuing possession as senior fullback Anthony Enderle (Gloucester, Mass.) capped off a six play, 55-yard drive when he punched it in from the two-yard line for the 49-34 final.

Williams got AIC on the board with a 24-yard touchdown reception from Arduino with 1:35 left in the first quarter, and Arduino hooked up with Easterling on a 17-yard score 33 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets will look for their second straight win when they host Pace University Friday in the first-ever AIC football game under the lights at Ronald J. Abdow Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
