WALTHAM, Mass. – The American International College baseball team posted a 12-4 game-two victory after dropping game-one 7-2 in a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Bentley University Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets' record now stands at 9-12-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Falcons record moved to 15-15 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
AIC trailed 4-2 heading into the top of the sixth in game-two before plating three runs to take the lead for good. Senior right fielder
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) singled up the middle to lead off the inning and then scored on senior second baseman
Nicholas Devine's (Springfield, Mass.) double to left center pull the Yellow Jackets within one, and Devine then scored on a single down the left field line off the bat of freshman third baseman
Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) to tie the game. Freshman catcher
Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) later scored on a double steal with two outs to put AIC ahead 5-4.
The Yellow Jackets then blew the game open with a six-run seventh that included back-to-back two-RBI doubles from senior first baseman
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) and Vallas, and tacked on one more in the ninth for the 12-4 final.
Bentley got out to a 2-0 lead I the bottom of third as junior Lamar first baseman Rey (Lynn, Mass.) scored while freshman center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass.) grounded into a double play before junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H.) singled to center to scored sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass.). Both teams scored a pair of runs in the fifth, giving the Falcons a 4-2 lead.
Freshman
David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) earned his first collegiate win after giving up four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. Senior
Geoff McCowat (Sterling, Va.) and freshman
Tom Burzynski (Granville, Mass) each tossed two scoreless innings of relief to close the door on Bentley. Junior John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y.) took the loss after giving up five runs on 12 hits in six innings.
The Falcons got off to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game-one as senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs on a triple to right center and then scored on Rey's triple to left center. The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the fourth on Concepcion's RBI-single to left center, but Bentley got that run back in the bottom half of the frame on Rey's single to center.
AIC had its chances for big innings in the seventh and eighth, but stranded two base runners in the seventh and left the bases loaded in the eighth after junior shortstop
Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) scored on McNiff's triple to right.
Graduate Rob Finneran (Garden City, N.Y.) improved his record to 5-2 after allowing two runs on seven hits and seven walks with 10 strikeouts in eight innings of work. Senior
John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in fiving innings, dropping his record to 0-5.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Stonehill College Monday for a Northeast-10 doubleheader that gets under way at noon.
