WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The American International College baseball team opened the 2012 season by winning both ends of a twin bill against Concordia (N.Y.) College at the Palm Beach Challenge. The Clippers are now 0-11 for the season.
The two teams went back and forth until the two teams were tied at four heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Yellow Jackets pushed two runs across for the 6-4 final. Freshman first baseman
Zach LeBlanc (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored from third as sophomore center fielder
Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore catcher
Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) on a wild pitch for the 6-4 final.
Senior first baseman
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore designated hitter
Dave Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Fenton went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior
Geoff McCowat (Sterling, Va.) got the win after tossing a scoreless sixth and classmate
Tim Bailey (Chicopee, Mass) earned the save with a scoreless seventh.
AIC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game two when senior second baseman Nick Devine (Springfield, Mass.) doubled to Asselin and never trailed in the game after exploding for seven runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth.
Devine finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored, while Asselin went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one driven in. Clark finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in, and Concepcion went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Freshman
Ryan Acevedo (Poway, Calif.) allowed one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings to earn the decision.
The Yellow Jackets will next face Nyack College Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the Palm Beach Challenge.
