SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Graduate guard
Sesoo Ikpah (Williamstown, N.J.) scored each of his 11 points in the final 5:16 of the game to lead the American International College men's basketball team to a 65-60 overtime victory over Le Moyne College Wednesday night in a Northerast-10 contest at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-15 overall and 5-13 in the Northeast-10 with the win, while the Dolphins dropped to 11-11 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets led 26-10 lead into the locker room at the half and appeared to be in control of the game with a 37-20 lead seven minutes into the second before Le Moyne went on a 26-4 run that spanned 9:39 to take a 46-41 lead with 2:05 left in the game.
The two teams then traded baskets and the Dolphins led 48-44 after sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind.) knocked down a jumper with 29 seconds to go, seemingly putting the game out of reach for AIC. Ikpah then drained a three from the left corner as he was fouled with 16 seconds to go and knocked down the free throw that followed to tie the game at 48.
Le Moyne had one last chance in regulation, but after the ball was knocked out of bounds on two occasions sophomore guard
Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) came up with a steal just before time expired in regulation and the game went to overtime.
The game was tied once again at 55 after Schmidkunz and sophomore forward Brain Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y.) traded threes before sophomore guard
Spencer Braithwaite (Dorchester, Mass.) dropped in a runner to put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good, 57-55 with 1:18 left in the extra frame.
The Dolphins managed to keep it close despite AIC going 8-for-10 at the line in the closing minute and were down three following Champion's layup with 10 seconds left before Ikpah, who was 7-of-8 at the line in overtime, sealed the win with a pair from the line with eight seconds on the clock.
Schmidkunz scored a game-high 19 points with four rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Yellow Jackets, while Braithwaite netted 15 points with six boards, and six assists. Ikpah finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y.) scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Le Moyne. Sophomore guard Chris Secky (Bemus Point, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points, four assists and three boards off the bench, while Champion finished with 11 points and four boards.
In the end it was AIC's free throw and three-point shooting that won it the game. The Yellow Jackets were 15-for-22 at the line and 10-for-26 from beyond the arc, compared to a 2-for-6 performance and the line and a 6-for-25 showing from long distance for the Dolphins. Le Moyne was 26-of-63 from the floor, while AIC went 20-for-49 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to Southern Connecticut State University Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
