SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College men's basketball team dropped a 73-68 overtime decision to visiting Assumption College Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 contest at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium.
The Greyhounds improved to 13-13 overall and 11-11 in the Northeast-10 with the win, and in doing so locked up the ninth seed in the Northeast-10 Championship Tournament. They will travel to eight-seeded Bentley University Friday for a 7 p.m. first round matchup. The Yellow Jackets finished 2011-12 with an overall record of 8-18 overall and 6-16 in conference play.
Junior forward Tim Beinert (Bellrose Village, N.Y.) went off for a game-high 35 points and 11 rebounds to lead Assumption to the win, going 10-of-12 from the field and a perfect 15-for-15 at the line. Junior forward Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J.) added 20 points with six boards while going 8-of-10 from the field with a three and was 3-for-4 at the line. Senior guard Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn.) also scored in double-figures with 13 points.
Sophomore guard
Spencer Braithwaite (Dorchester, Mass.) scored 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field with three makes from downtown, while fellow sophomore guard
Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) netted 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward
David Campbell (Boston, Mass.) added 13 points with six boards off the bench.
It was a tight game from the start with neither team leading by more than eight the entire game. The Greyhounds led 53-45 with 6:06 left in the second half and found themselves up seven after Beinert's layup made it 59-52 with 3:08 to go.
The Yellow Jackets then closed the game with a 9-2 run over the final three minutes to send the game into overtime, tying the contest on Campbell's layup with eight seconds remaining in regulation. Beinert then scored each of the first five points in the extra period and Assumption never looked back on its way to the win.
The Greyhounds shot 52.1 percent (25-48) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-15) from three and were 19-of-24 at the line in the game. AIC shot 47.3 percent (26-55) from the floor, were 10-of-18 from three and 6-of-10 at the line.
