NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior guard
Spencer Braithwaite (Dorchester, Mass.) tied the game with three seconds left in regulation and junior center
David Campbell (Boston, Mass.) drained what proved to be the game-winning free throws with 15 ticks left in the extra frame as the American International College men's basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 84-82 in overtime Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-2 for the season and evened their conference record at 2-2 for the year. The Owls record also now stands at 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE-10.
Junior guard
Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) scored a game-high 25 points while going 8-of-14 from downtown to lead AIC, while senior guard
Ricky Hudson (Sewell, N.J.) netted 20 points with six rebounds and four assists. Braithwaite finished the game with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field with three threes, while Campbell ended with 16 points and nine boards.
Senior forward Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor with three threes to lead five players that scored in double-digits for SCSU, while also grabbing seven rebounds and blocking six shots in the game. Junior guard/forward Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) scored 16 points with seven boards and three assists, while sophomore guard Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) scored 15 points with five boards, three assists and two steals.
The Yellow Jackets led 7-3 following Campbell's layup 1:38 into the game, but that lead didn't last long as the Owls went on a 12-3 run to take a 15-10 lead 6:13 into the contest. AIC didn't regain the lead again until Braithwaite drained a three to open the scoring in overtime.
SCSU led 40-32 at the half and led by seven with 5:06 left in regulation, 69-62. The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to one on few occasions, but were unable to draw even or take the lead.
AIC gradually chipped away at that deficit and Campbell pulled the Yellow Jackets within two with a pair of free throws to make it 73-71 with 1:27 left in the second half. Langston answered with a layup at the other end to push SCSU's lead back to four.
Graduate guard
Sesoo Ikpah (Williamstown, N.J.) then knocked down a jumper on AIC's ensuing possession to make it a two-point game again and Hudson stole the ball from sophomore guard Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Yellow Jackets a shot at tying or winning the game. AIC then called a timeout that setup Braithwaite's game-tying jumper with three seconds left in the period and force overtime.
The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the extra frame as Braithwaite knocked down a three to open the scoring in the period and he his layup with 1:17 to go gave AIC an 82-80 lead. Langston then tied the game with a layup of his own with 38 seconds to go before Campbell was fouled with 15 seconds left. He then hit both free throws for the 84-82 final.
The game then appeared to be over after Langston's three was off the mark just before time expired, but Schmidkunz was called for a foul with just 0.8 seconds remaining. Houston then stepped to the line with a chance to tie the game and force a second overtime, but he missed both attempts and the Owls were unable to get an attempt at a tip off the rebound of the second shot.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Tuesday when it travels to the University of New Haven for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
