COLCHESTER, Vt. – The American International College men's basketball team dropped an 81-76 overtime decision at Saint Michael's College Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 contest.
The Purple Knights improved to 7-8 overall and 6-5 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 4-11 overall and 2-9 in conference play with their sixth consecutive setback.
AIC led 36-28 at the half and was up 14, 60-46, midway through the second frame, but Saint Michael's battled back with an 18-4 run to tie the game at 64 with 5:36 remaining in the period.
The two teams traded show from there and the Yellow Jackets found themselves up 72-70 after sophomore guard
Janek Schmidkunz (Berlin, Germany) knocked down a jumper with 1:21 left. The Purple Knights tied the game with nine ticks left on sophomore guard Mike Holton Jr.'s (Portland, Ore.) layup to force overtime.
AIC scored the opening bucket of the extra period on a layup from graduate forward
Anthony Thomas (Baltimore, Md.) before Saint Michael's went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Purple Knights. Senior forward Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn.), Holton Jr., freshman guard Corey Crawford, (Dover, Del.) scored 13 points each, while junior forward Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif.) and freshman forward James Cambronne (De Barry, Fla.) added 12 apiece.
The Yellow Jackets also had five player scored in double-figures. Schmidkunz scored a game-high 17 points with three boards and two assists, while sophomore guard
Spencer Braithwaite (Dorchester, Mass.) netted 16 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Graduate guard
Sesoo Ikpah (Williamstown, N.J.) and sophomore forwards
Brennan Cooper (Springfield, Mass.) and Mark Ellis (Stamford, Conn.) scored 10 points each.
AIC will next head to Stonehill College Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
