Second Half Surge Propels Bentley Past AIC, 28-10

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University scored 12 unanswered points in the second half to record a 28-10 win over the American International College football team Friday night in a Northeast-10 contest.

The Falcons improved to 4-1 overall and 4-1 and 3-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Bentley opened the scoring on a one-yard touchdown run from senior running back Bobby Tarr (Byfield, Mass.) that capped off an 11-play, 66 yard drive six minutes into the game to take an early 7-0 lead following the first drive of the game. AIC answered on the ensuing possession when redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Arduino (Cornwall, N.Y.) scored on a five-yard run to finish off a nine-play, 57-yard scoring drive to tie the game three minutes later.

The Yellow Jackets took their only lead of the game on a 31-yard field goal from freshman place kicker Cesar Vaca-Hurtado (Naples, Fla.) four minutes into the second quarter and carried that 10-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. That drive was setup on the defensive side of the ball as sophomore linebacker Jaquawne Simpkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) stripped graduate quarterback Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass.) at the AIC 45, recovered the ball and returned it to the Bentley 49.

The Falcons took over in the second half and regained the lead for good with 6:21 left in the third quarter. Sophomore running back Lorenzo Warren (Boston, Mass.) returned a punt 64 yards to the Yellow Jackets' one-yard line and then punched it in two plays later.

Warren then found the end zone one a three-yard run 20 seconds into the fourth quarter to close out a nine-play, 85-yard scoring drive and Tarr capped off the scoring with a six-yard scoring run with 2:38 left in the contest, capping off an 11-play, 86-yard drive.

AIC ventured into Bentley territory just twice in the second half, both in the fourth quarter. The first resulted in a blocked 24-yard field goal attempt and the second saw time expire in the contest.

The Falcons gained 355 yards in the game to just 230 for the Yellow Jackets, which helped Bentley control the ball for 34:30 compared to 25:30 of possession for AIC.

Tarr finished the game with 112 yards on 20 carries to lead the Falcons to the win. Warren registered 130 all-purpose yards, 96 on returns and 44 rushing, and also scored two TDs. Johnson completed 20-of-27 passes for 165 yards, which included nine catches for 107 yards for graduate wide receiver Wade Critlides (Wayland, Mass.).

Sophomore running back Terrell Williams (Hempstead, N.Y.) had 12 carries for 102 yards for AIC, while Arduino was 11-for-21 for just 65 yards and ran the ball 19 times for 65 yards and a score.

Sophomore linebacker Blaine Hopwood (New Bedford, Mass.) registered a game-high nine tackles in the game with 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble, while senior defensive lineman Sal Ruffino (Allentown, Pa.) totaled eight tackles with four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Sophomore linebacker Kyle Young (Ellicott City, Md.) also had eight tackles in the game.

Sophomore defensive lineman Justin Tervo (Millbury, Mass.) had seven tackles to lead the Yellow Jackets. Junior linebacker Darius Evans (Linden, N.J.), junior defensive back Markell Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and sophomore linebacker Joel Bowen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six tackles each.

AIC will return to action October 8 when it hosts Saint Anselm College for a 1 p.m. Northeast-10 contest at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
