MANCHESTER, N.H. – The American International College baseball team split a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Southern New Hampshire University Saturday, taking game-two 4-0 after falling in game-one 11-2.
The Yellow Jackets finished the season with an overall record of 17-25, including an 11-15 mark in the NE-10. The Penmen are now 24-22 overall and 11-15 in conference play.
Game-two was scoreless until the top of the fifth when senior second baseman
Paul Maza (Valencia, Venezuela) doubled down the left field line to plate junior right fielder
Dennis Duffy (Warwick, R.I.) from third.
That run proved to be all AIC would need as senior
John Shivo (Ayer, Mass.) fanned nine natters while scattering five hits as he tossed his second complete-game shutout of the season to improve his record to 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on three more runs in the eight, all with two outs, for the 4-0 final. SNHU's best scoring chances came in the first and eight innings, but Shivo managed to work out of both situations as the Penmen stranded two runners in each of those frames.
Sophomore Timothy Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) pitched well, but was still tagged with the loss for the Penmen after allowing one run on three hits and five walks with 11 strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
SNHU scored early and often in game-one, taking a 2-0 lead after the first and opening a 6-0 advantage after three.
Graduate right fielder Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) did most of the damage for the Penmen with a two-RB triple in the first and a three-run homer in the third. He finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBIs.
The Yellow Jackets broke-up the shutout bid with two runs in the top of the fifth when senior shortstop
Sean McClelland (Sterling, Va.) singled to drive in freshman left fielder
Dave Clark (Chicopee, Mass.) and Maza later scored when junior Garrett Jewell (Alexandria, N.H.) was called for a balk.
SNHU answered with three straight hits that scored a run in the sixth and tacked on two more in the eighth on O'Neil's single up the middle for the 11-2 final.
Jewell allowed two runs on four hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts over seven innings to improve to 4-2 on the mound, while senior
Zach Bunszell (Medford, Mass.) gave up nine runs on eight hits and four walks with three Ks in 5.2 innings in falling to 1-4.
