SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College Sunday at AIC Park, winning game-one 9-2 and game-two 4-3 on a three-run seventh inning. The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-8 for the season, while the Deacons fell to 5-15.
Senior
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) gave AIC a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when his single to left drove in sophomore
Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) to give the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead in the first game of the series. They then exploded for five runs in the second frame and put up a three-spot in the sixth to put the game away.
McNiff went 2-for-4 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Amate was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Anthony Arrichiello (Yonkers, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice in the game.
Bloomfield's only two runs came in the top of the fifth when junior Luis Buron (Garfield, N.J.) doubled to right center field to plate junior Rafael Medina (Key Largo, Fla.) and senior Anderson Minyetty (Jersey City, N.J.).
Senior
Zach Bunszell (Medford, Mass.) gave up just two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over six innings to earn the win on the mound. Sophomore Kevin Baumiller (West Palm Beach, Fla.) took the loss after allowing six runs, one earned, in three innings of work.
AIC trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning of game-two before scoring three times in the bottom half of the frame to walk-off with the win.
Junior
Mike Tranghese (Springfield, Mass.) delivered a two-RBI single to runners on second and third to tie the game with one out before McNiff singled up the middle to plate senior
Sean McClelland (Chicopee, Mass.) from third with the game-winning run.
Tranghese was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBIs, while McClelland was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for the Yellow Jackets. Medina was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Bloomfield in the loss.
Tim Bailey tossed two no-hit innings of relief to get the win on the hill.
AIC will next open the Northeast-10 portion of its schedule Tuesday when it hosts Pace University at 3:30 p.m. at AIC Park.
