No. 13 Southern Connecticut Takes Two from Baseball Team, 3-2 and 10-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College baseball team lost both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against 13th-ranked Southern Connecticut State University Saturday at AIC Park, dropping game one 3-2 and game-two 10-1.

The Owls improved to 15-0 for the season with the two wins, while the Yellow Jackets record fell to 4-8.

AIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one when sophomore Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) reached on an error that allowed junior Mike Tranghese (Springfield, Mass.) to score from third after drawing a lead-off walk. Tranghese scored again in the third on a single up the middle off the bat of senior Anthony Arrichiello (Yonkers, N.Y.).

The Yellow Jackets' 2-0 lead until the top of the eighth when senior Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) launched a three-run homer, allowing him to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

Freshman A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) earned the win on the hill after tossing two scoreless inning of relief, while junior Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) earned the save after tossing a scoreless ninth. Junior John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) took the loss after giving up three runs in seven-plus innings with six Ks.

SCSU opened a 2-0 lead in the top of the second in game-two. Junior Brian Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) through the right side to push across junior A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass.) from second base and then scored on sophomore Mike Cleary's (West Boylston, Mass.) triple to right-center. The Owls broke the game open with six runs in the fourth before adding runs in the eighth and ninth to open a 10-0 lead.

Senior Dillon Fontaine's (Amenia, N.Y.) RBI-double to right center spoiled SCSU's bid for a shutout in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Emmett Ravis (South Glostonbury, Conn.) scored from second on the play after reaching with a two-out single to left.

Senior Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) allowed just two hits over eight innings to earn the win, while senior John Shivo (Ayer, Mass.) took the loss after allowing eight runs in 3.2 innings.

The Yellow Jackets will next host a non-conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College Sunday starting at noon at AIC Park.
