WORCESTER, Mass. – Assumption College used a 7-0 run in the later stages of the second half to defeat the American International College men's basketball team 59-52 Wednesday night at Laska Gymnasium.
The Greyhounds improved to 2-1 overall, while the Yellow Jacket fell to 0-3. It was the Northeast-10 opener for both teams.
The game was tied at 29 at the half and Assumption held a slim one-point lead, 46-45, with 7:15 to go before going on a 7-0 run to open a 53-45 advantage three minutes later. Kevin Donahue () put the game away when he drained a three coming out of a timeout with 1:48 to go to make it 57-50.
Junior forward Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y.) led four Assumption players with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior guard Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn.), junior guard Mike Auriema (Manchester, Conn.) and freshman forward Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass.) netted 12 points each for the Greyhounds.
Sophomore forward
David Campbell (Boston, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field to lead AIC, while sophomore guard
D.J. Gutridge (Neptune, N.J.) added nine points with five rebounds and five assists.
Assumption shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-15) from three and 54.5 percent (6-11) from the line. The Yellow Jackets shot 45.1 percent (23-51) from the floor, 28.6 percent 094-14) and went 2-for-3 from the line.
AIC will next open the home portion of its schedule Saturday night with a 7 p.m. non-conference contest against Felician College at Butova Gymnasium.
