Stonehill Sweeps NE-10 Doubleheader From Baseball Team

Box Score - Game 1, Box Score - Game 2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College baseball team dropped both ends of a Northeast-10 doubleheader to Stonehill College Saturday afternoon at AIC Park, Dropping game-one 9-8 and game-two 9-5. The Skyhawks improved to 9-9 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 5-15 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Stonehill, which was helped by six AIC errors, held a 3-0 lead before plating three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings of game-one to seeming put the game out of reach, but the Yellow Jackets rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the ninth as it nearly pulled off the improbable comeback.

Junior Nicholas Devine (Springfield, Mass.) led off the inning with a pinch-hit solo shot over the fence in left center and followed junior second baseman Paul Maza's (Valencia, Venezuela) two-RBI single with a three-run bomb in almost the same exact spot as his leadoff shot.

The rally came to an end after that as sophomore first baseman Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) lined out to short to end the game.

Junior started Alex McCormick (Weymouth, Mass.) earned the win after scattering four hits through eight innings and junior reliever Shane Penzone (Hudson, Mass.) got the save after getting the final two outs of the contest. Junior starter Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) took the loss after allowing six runs, two earned, in six and two-third innings with six strikeouts, dropping him to 1-4 this season.

Both teams pushed three runs across in the first inning of game-two and the Skyhawks, who scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, took the lead for good in the top of the second when senior center fielder Rob Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn.) scored on an error with two outs in the frame.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 9-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth and appeared to have another late rally in them, but scored just one run on senior left fielder Dan Bassani's (Naples, Fla.) one-out single to left.

Sophomore starter Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) improved to 2-0 after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with three Ks in seven and one-third innings. Junior starter Zach Bunszell (Medford, Mass.) took the loss after giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts in four-plus innings.

Bassani was 3-for-5 in game two with an RBI and two runs scored, while junior first baseman Dan Mooney (Bennington, Vt.) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mooney finished the day 4-for-7 with three RBIs and a run scored.

AIC will next host Adelphi University Tuesday in a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
