Baseball Edged at Merrimack

Box Score - Game 1, Box Score - Game 2

North Andover, Mass. - The American International College baseball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 decisions at Merrimack College Saturday afternoon, losing game-one 2-1 in 10 innings and game-two 4-0. The Warriors improved to 16-15 overall and 11-12 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 6-27 overall and 3-19 in conference play.

Merrimack took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth in game one when freshman Brett Julian (Weymouth, Mass.) singled up the middle to score sophomore P.J. Farnham (Andover, Mass.) from third. That lead didn't last long as junior Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y.) singled to right o drive in freshman Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.), tying the game at one in the top of the sixth.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the 10th when senior Brendan Pyburn (Peabody, Mass.) singled to left center with the bases loaded and no outs to give Merrimack the win.

Junior Keith Johansen (Tyngsborough, Mass.) earned the decision after tossing a scoreless 10th with two strikeouts to improve to 2-1. Senior Ryan O'Rourke (Worcester, Mass.) had a no decision after giving up one run on four hits with 16 Ks in nine innings.

Junior Sean Stevenson (Holyoke Mass.) took the loss after entering the game to start the bottom of the 10th. Sophomore John Hanna (Dudley, Mass.) didn't factor in the decision after allowing one run on seven hits with five strikeouts in nine innings.

Senior Dylan Ellis (Gloucester, Mass.) tossed a five-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in game-two to lead the Warriors to the win and a sweep of the doubleheader.

Merrimack got the only run it would need in the bottom of the third when senior Matt Hogan (Andover, Mass.) singled to right to score freshman Mark O'Flynn (Ipswich, Mass.) from third. The Warriors added on run in the fourth and tacked on two runs in the sixth for the 4-0 final. Hogan finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while O'Flynn went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in.

Sophomore Geoff McCowat (Sterling, Va.) fell to 1-1 for the season after giving up two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in four innings.

AIC will return to action Sunday when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State University at noon.
