SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College men's basketball team outscored visiting Adelphi University 39-23 in the second half to record a 61-50 Northeast-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10 with their third straight win, while the Panthers fell to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Junior forward
Isiah Wallace (Springfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 18 points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals, and in doing so moved into 26th on AIC's all-time scoring list with 1,046 career points. He passed Derek Owens, who scored 1,029 points from 1982-86, and Ray Eschols, who netted 1,027 points from 1986-90.
Senior guard
Allen Aragbaye (Corona, Calif.) added 17 points with four rebounds and two assists, while junior guard
Adrian Hynes-Guery (Montreal, Que.) added nine points with four rebounds, four assists and seven steals.
Junior guard Rob Johnson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored 12 points with three rebounds to lead Adelphi, while senior guard Richard Byrd (Central Islip, N.Y.) added nine points with seven boards. Sophomore guard John Calarco (New Rochelle, N.Y.) also scored nine points.
AIC struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 22.7 percent (5-22) from the floor, as it went into the locker room trailing 27-22 at the half.
The second half was a different story as the Yellow Jackets came out firing with a 16-5 run to take a 38-32 lead 6:09 into the second half. AIC never trailed from the point on in the game as it shot a much improved 60- percent (12-20) from the field in the second frame.
The Panthers shot 44 percent from the floor in the first half, but AIC stepped it up on the defensive end as well in the second period as it held them to just 24 percent (6-25) from the floor.
AIC will next travel to Pace University Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
