BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Sacred Heart University scored each of the final three goals of the game to record a 4-2 Atlantic Hockey victory over the American International College men's ice hockey team Saturday afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
The Pioneers improved to 1-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the AHA with their first win of the season, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-5-0 overall and in conference play.
Senior forward Evan Mladenoff (Leawood, Kan.) gave SHU an early 1-0 lead just 2:59 into the game and the score remained that way until sophomore forward
Nick Campanale (Chester Sprigs, Pa.) tied the game at 12:44 of the second period. The score didn't remain tied for long as freshman forward
Jon Puskar (Grosse Isle, Mich.) gave AIC a 2-1 lead just 58 seconds later.
The Pioneers drew even on junior forward Matt Gingera's (Winnipeg, Man.) marker with 54 seconds left in the second frame and regained the lead for good when sophomore forward Reid MacLeod (Teulon, Man.) scored 8:07 into the third. Sophomore forward Eric Delong (Oakville, B.C.) added an empty net goal for the 4-2 final.
Sophomore Steven Legatto (Kelowna, B.C.) recorded 27 saves to earn the decision in goal, while sophomore
Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) had 30 stops in taking the loss.
Sacred Heart outshot AIC 34-29 in the game and was 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Yellow Jackets were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
AIC's seven-game road trip will continue November 19 when the Yellow Jackets travel to Army for a 7:05 p.m. Atlantic Hockey contest.
