Men's Ice Hockey Falls Short at UConn 5-4

STORRS, Conn. –The American International College men's ice hockey team dropped a 5-4 decision Saturday evening against Uconn. Although the yellow jackets sophomore defenseman Nick Grasso (Smithtown, N.Y.) found the back of the net 1:16 in, Uconn's junior defenseman Chris Waterstradt (Tulsa, Okla.) answered at the 3:35 mark. The Uconn Huskies improved to 3-4-0 overall and 3-3-1 in the AHA, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-7-0 overall and in league play.

Senior forward Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a power play goal, 6:50 into the game with assists from sophomore defenseman Chris Markiewicz (Calgary, Alb.) and junior forward Mike Penny (Calgary, Alb.). At 10:51 freshman forward Jordan Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored with assists from freshman forward Billy Latta (West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore forward James Gallagher (Marquette, Mich.) to tie the game at 2. Before the end of the first period senior forward Andrew Olsen (Alexandria, Minn.) scored the third goal for UConn, unassisted.

Nineteen minutes into the second period junior forward Nielsson Arcibal (Vista, Cali.) found the upper right corner of the net from sophomore forward Adam Pleskach (Beausejour, Man.) and senior defenseman Mike Little (Enfield, Conn.).In the third period UConn scored twice, getting goals from sophomore forward Miles Winter (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore forward Sean Ambrose (Moorhead, Minn.). With one minute remaining AIC pulled Meisner from the net to make a last ditch effort to tie up the game. Pleskach scored with one second remaining, assisted by his line mate Arcibal to make the final score 5-4 UConn.

Sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) finished the game with 24 saves to earn the victory for the Huskies, while sophomore goaltender Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) had 29 saves in the loss.

UConn outshot AIC 34-28.

Next up, the Yellow Jackets travel to Mercyhurst on Friday night, November 26, 2010 for a 7:05 p.m. Atlantic Hockey contest.
