WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The American International College men's basketball team shot 56.4 percent (31-55) from the field and 62.5 percent (10-16) from three on its way to a 78-62 Northeast-10 victory at the University of New Haven Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0 for the season and 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Chargers fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Senior guard
Allen Aragbaye (Corona, Calif.) scored a game-high 23 points after going 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc while dishing out four assists with two steals. Junior forward
Isiah Wallace (Springfield, Mass.) netted 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor to go with five boards, three assists and two steals.
Sophomore guard
Ricky Hudson (Sewell, N.J.) added 13 points off the bench, while senior forward
Denzel Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted six points with a team-best 11 rebounds and three assists.
Senior forward Robert Jamerson (Forestville, Md.) posted a double-double to lead New Haven, scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 15 boards. Freshman guard Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman forward Krystian Foriest (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds each.
The Chargers held a brief two-point lead at 11-9 eight minutes into the game before Hudson drained a three on the next trip down the floor to give AIC the lead for good. Wallace then made a layup with 7:52 to go in the first half that triggered a 14-0 run that was capped by an Aragbaye three, giving the Yellow Jackets a 37-17 lead with 4:36 to go in the frame.
New Haven managed the shave six points off the AIC lead by halftime as the Yellow Jackets took a 42-28 lead into the locker room. AIC opened the second half with a 12-0 run over the first 5:34 to open a commanding 26-point lead and never looked back.
The Yellow Jackets held the Chargers to 37.3 percent (22-59) shooting from the field and 21.7 percent (5-23) from three. New Haven was 13-of-15 from the free throw line, while AIC went 6-for-12 at the line.
The Yellow Jackets will next host a non-conference game against Bloomfield College Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Butova Gymnasium.
