Parent Breaks Career TD Record, AIC Ends 2010 with 35-10 win at Assumption

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior quarterback Rob Parent (West Warwick, R.I.) completed 23-of-33 passes for 260 yards and four touchdowns to lead the American International College football team to a 35-10 Northeast-10 victory at Assumption College Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets finished the 2010 with a record of 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the NE-10 after winning five of their last six games, while the Greyhounds ended the year at 6-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

AIC finished tied for first in the final conference standings with Bentley University, University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University. New Haven was declared Northeast-10 champion based on the conference tie-breaking procedure with a 3-0 record against the other three teams.

Parent finished his collegiate career with 76 career touchdown passes, breaking the previous record of 73 touchdown throws by Tom Guy (1999-2003). Parent finished second only to Guy in passing yardage (7,645), completions (542) and pass attempts (959).

After a scoreless first quarter Assumption opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal from junior place kicker Brian Nowak (Wayland, Mass.) 1:52 into the second period to give the Greyhounds a 3-0 lead. AIC answered with 35 straight points on its way to the win.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board when Parent connected with junior wide receiver Andre Samuels (Linden, N.J.) on a nine-yard scoring pass with 3:17 to go in the first half to give AIC the lead for good.

The defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and senior Davon LeGrier's (Paterson, N.J.) 30-yard punt return gave the Yellow Jackets the ball back at the Assumption 49-yard line with 2:24 to go in the half. AIC marched down the field and Parent found LeGrier with the record-setting nine-yard score with just 11 seconds left in the half.

Junior tight end Trevor Perryman (Centereach, N.Y.) caught a 19-yard score with 4:00 left in the third and Samuels caught a six-yard pass for his second score of the day with 1:51 left in the game. Sophomore running back Mike Mayo (Roosevelt, N.Y.) found the end zone with a 14-yard run for the only rushing TD of the day.

The Greyhounds managed to put together a scoring drive on the next possession to break the AIC scoring run that was capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Andrew Kupec (Wyckoff, N.J.) to senior tight end Eric Schindler (Kenilworth, N.J.) with six second left in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets' defense held Assumption to just 232 yards of total offense in the game. Sophomore linebacker Darius Evans (Linden, N.J.) led the unit with eight tackles (seven solo), while sophomore defensive back Markell Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was credited with seven tackles (four solo) and one tackle for loss. Senior linebacker Terrence Holley (Bogota, N.J.) had six tackles in the game, leaving him just one shy of 300 for his career.

Junior defensive back Sonny Dillinger (Naples, Fla.) and sophomore linebacker Matt Martino (Lincroft, N.J.) had a game-high nine tackles each for Assumption.

With a final record of 6-4, AIC secured the 37th winning season in program's 74-season history and the 13th under 17-year head coach Art Wilkins, who is the Yellow Jackets' all-time winningest coach with a career record of 106-69 (.606) at AIC.
