SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward
Lisa Duckles (Netcong, N.J.) scored 4:33 into overtime to give the American International College field hockey team a 3-2 Northeast-10 victory over Merrimack College Saturday afternoon at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-4 overall, tying the school record for wins in a season, and 3-1 in the Northeast-10. AIC also won six games last year. The Warriors fell to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Senior back
Kat Heterbring (Java Center, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season 7:49 into the second period off a penalty corner that was taken by junior forward
Amanda McLean (Branford, Conn.) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
The lead grew to two goals eight minutes later when senior forward
Rhonwen Peters (Aquashicola, Pa.) and unassisted goal for her third tally of the season.
Merrimack got on the board three minutes after that when senior forward/midfielder Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.) scored to cut AIC's lead in half and sophomore forward Alex Sakelarios (Chelmsford, Mass.) tied the game with just one minute on the clock to force overtime.
The two teams traded chances in the extra period before Duckles forced a turnover on the offensive end and beat Merrimack sophomore goalie Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) with a shot from the top of the scoring area to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.
Junior goalie
Kim Steiner (Little Falls, N.Y.) recorded three saves to earn the win in the cage for AIC, while Bergquist had 13 stops in taking the loss for the Warriors.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Merrimack 23-10 in the game and had a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners in the game.
AIC will next head to Stonehill College Wednesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
