Baseball Ends Skid, Earns Split With Saint Anselm

Manchester, N.H. - The American International College baseball team ended a ten game losing streak with a 13-8 victory over Northeast-10 opponent Saint Anselm in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The Hawks held off the Yellow Jackets to win the opener 4-2. AIC stands at 7-28 overall and 5-18 in the NE-10, while Saint Anselm is 15-26 overall and 10-15 in conference play.

The Yellow Jackets offense came alive in game two with 18 hits and scored in six of nine innings. Sophomore catcher #Anthony Arrichiello# (Yonkers, N.Y.) started the scoring with a two-run single with the bases loaded in the first inning.

In the fourth inning, AIC tacked on three more runs as freshmen #Clifford Laraway# (Westfield, Mass.) and #Greg Caruso# (Stonypoint, N.Y.) led-off the inning with base hits. Junior left fielder #Dan Bassani# (Naples, Fla.) came to the plate with two outs and blasted a two-run jack to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-2 lead.

Senior pitcher #Dan Nugent# (Cambridge, Mass.) earned the win for AIC, while pitching five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Freshman Tim Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) took the loss after giving up seven earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.

In game one, sophomore #Dillon Fontaine# (Amenia, N.Y.) pitched all eight innings for the Yellow Jackets. He took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, and striking out eight. Senior Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) went the distance for the win. He allowed just two runs on eight hits and had 13 Ks.

Bassani went a combined 5-9 from the plate and scored five runs, while driving in five in two games. Arrichiello combined to go 4-8 with four RBI and a run scored, while Laraway went 4-8 with two runs scored.

Saint Anselm senior left fielder Melvin Perdue (Jonesboro, Ga.) went 3-8 on the day, while driving in three runs and hitting a home run in game one. Freshman first baseman Benjamin Waldrip (Medford, Mass.) was 5-7 with four runs scored in two games.

The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow as they face Saint Anselm at home at 1 p.m.
