Springfield, Mass. – The American International College team dropped a Northeast-10 contest, 14-5, to Franklin Pierce at AIC Park Monday afternoon. The Ravens came out hot and tagged the Yellow Jackets for nine runs in the top of the first. The loss dropped AIC to 6-26 overall and 4-16 in the NE-10, while Franklin Pierce improved to 24-14 and 15-5.
Senior left fielder Ted Lerud (Hampden, Mass.) started the scoring with a two-run double to left center to plate sophomore designated hitter Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass.) and sophomore catcher Mike Dowd (East Bridgewater, Mass.). Later in the inning, Dowd would add three more runs with a double down the right field line.
Sophomore relief pitcher
John Scanlan (Glastonbury, Conn.) pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, for the Yellow Jackets, while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Freshman starter
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) lasted just 0.2 innings and took the loss after nine runs, four of which were earned.
The Ravens used seven pitchers who combined to give up only seven hits and struck out nine. The win went to junior Heath Wasylow (Rehoboth, Mass.) who pitched a scoreless second innings. Senior Vinny Gemma (Revere, Mass.) pitched a scoreless first inning in the start.
Freshman third baseman
Tyler McElman (Marlborough, Mass.) hit his third homerun of the season for AIC. It was a two-run shot that scored classmate, and shortstop,
Dan Mooney (Bennington, Vt.). Mooney finished the day 1-3 with a run scored and one knocked in.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow as they travel to Merrimack for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
