35 Unanswered Points Leads Football Past Visiting Husson

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – After surrendering a touchdown on the first play of the game, the American International College football team scored 35 unanswered points to register a 35-7 win over Division III Husson University Saturday afternoon at John Homer Miller Field. The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 2-2. Freshman #Mike Mayo# (Roosevelt, N.Y.) carried the ball 24 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns in his AIC debut.

The win was AIC's 10th in a row, a streak that began with a 44-21 win over Merrimack on October 6, 2007. This current winning streak is tied for the second-longest winning streak in program history. The Yellow Jackets also won 10 consecutive games spanning the 1979-80 seasons and won a school-record 11 straight contests spanning the 1974-75 campaigns.

The win was also the Yellow Jackets 12th consecutive home victory, which dates back to November 5, 2005 when AIC recorded a 51-28 win over Saint Anselm, and marks the second-longest home winning streak in program history. The Yellow Jackets won a school-record 13 consecutive games spanning the 1999-2002 seasons.

Husson jumped out to a 7-0 lead juts 13 seconds into the game as freshman quarterback James McCandles (Hollywood, Fla.) connected with junior wide receiver James Dobson (Berwick, Maine) on a 69-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The Eagles weren't able to move the ball after that as they gained just 83 yards the rest of the game.

AIC got on the board 47 seconds into the second quarter when sophomore quarterback #Rob Parent# (West Warwick, R.I.) found junior wide receiver #Kertis Hussey# (Paterson, N.J.) on a four-yard scoring pass to tie the game 7-all. The Yellow Jackets took the lead for good on Hussey's second touchdown reception of the day with 6:27 remaining in the first half and never looked back. AIC's second score came just two plays after junior defensive back #Mike Szawlowski# (Northampton, Mass.) intercepted McCandles at the Husson 39-yard line.

The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the third quarter, first on a one-yard quarterback keeper by Parent and then on a six-yard run by Mayo. Mayo, who gained 161 of his game-high 189 yards in the second half, then capped the scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter with a one-yard run for the 35-7 final.

Graduate student #Travis Poole# (Brooklyn, N.Y.) caught five passes for a game-high 156 yards for AIC. He leads the team with 23 catches and 541 receiving yards on the season. Parent completed 12-of-22 passes for 201 yards had three touchdowns - two passing and one rushing - on the afternoon. Senior #Marek Przybylek# (Olsztyn, Poland) converted each of his seven PATs.

The Yellow Jackets defense held Husson to just 152 yards of total offense, marking the second straight game that AIC held its opponent under 200-yards of total offense, and registered 10 tackles for loss and five sacks in the game. Both were season-highs.

Graduate student #Brian DeStephano# (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led AIC's defensive effort with four tackles, while juniors #Nick Abraham# (Tewksbury, Mass.) and #Terrance Mercer# (Bridgeport, Conn.) each tallied 3.5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Mercer also had one sack and one fumble recovery and junior #Rich Reichert# (Kings Park, N.Y.) recorded three tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Senior Pat Ouellette (Biddeford, Maine) posted a game-high 7.5 tackles for the Eagles, while junior Bobby Gilbert tallied seven tackles, one tackled for loss and one sack. McCandles completed just 6-of-15 passes for 132 yards and was picked off twice in the game. Junior Julius Williams (Boston, Mass.) was held to just 47 yards on 17 carries.

The Yellow Jackets return to action October 4 when they travel to Saint Anselm for a 1 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
