AIC Falls to Saint Anselm in Pitchers Duel 2-1

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Saint Anselm Tuesday afternoon at AIC Park. The Hawks improved to 8-16 on the season and 4-9 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 7-15 overall and 5-6 in conference play. Sophomore Nick Noblit (Westfield, Mass.) allowed two runs on six hits while recording a season-high nine strikeouts in taking the loss for AIC.

Saint Anselm scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning when sophomore Conor Amirault (Haverhill, Mass.) singled to score senior Ryan O'Rourke (Norwood, Mass.) from second. The single was the only hit of the day for Amirault, while O'Rourke went 2 for 2. The Hawks added the games winning run in the seventh inning when senior Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass.) tripled down the left field line, scoring sophomore Even Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) from first base.

AIC scored their only run off of senior Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) in the third inning when senior Jason Rustico (Southington, Conn.) singled to score freshman Herb Coggeshall (Coventry, Conn.) from second base. Rustico went 1 for 2 on the day with one RBI.

Barese pitched eight innings scattering four hits and recorded seven strike outs. The win brings his record to 3-1 on the season, while the loss puts Noblit's record at 0-4. Sophomore David Giarrusso (Cranston, R.I.) got the save for the Hawks pitching the final inning of the ball game and recording one strikeout.

Saint Anselm threatened in the top of the eight with runners on first and third and two outs when Rusitco made a high-light reel catch as he dove to his left, robbing Kelleher of a sure single to end the inning. The Yellow Jackets also threatened to score in the eighth inning with two outs, but were unable to push junior Dan Fey (Plymouth, Mass.) across the plate from third.

Next up the Yellow Jackets will travel to Saint Anselm on Thursday.
