Yellow Jackets Sweep Doubleheader Versus Assumption

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College baseball team swept Assumption in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at AIC Park. The Yellow Jackets took the first game 9-4 and the second game 7-3. With the sweep, AIC's record improves to 7-14 on the season and 5-5 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds fall to 10-14 on the year and 3-7 in the conference. Senior Jason Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) went 5 for 7 on the day with five RBI's and four runs scored.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 3-2 heading into the seventh inning of game one when Rustico singled down the left field line, scoring freshmen Herb Coggeshall (Coventry, Conn.) and Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y.). Coggeshall went 1 for 4 in the game with two runs scored, while Fontaine went 1 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior David Dest (Orange, Conn.) also had a good day at the plate going 2 for 5 with two RBIs in the first game.

Senior Uchon Yi (Windsor Locks, Conn.) tossed 8 innings allowing two earned runs on 11 hits as he improved his record to 2-1 on the season. Freshman Zach Jacques (Jefferson, Mass.) picked up the loss for Assumption after pitching only two thirds of an inning allowing 3 runs.

In the second game, AIC jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after three innings and never let the Greyhounds back into the game. Rustico went 2 for 2 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Dest hit safely in 3 out of his 4 at bats and scored twice. Junior Kevin Farrell (Wilbraham, Mass.) also added two RBI's for the Yellow Jackets.

Graduate student Brett Cooley (Somers, Conn.) pitched all nine innings allowing three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. The win improves Cooley's record to 2-3 on the year. Sophomore Tim Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Greyhounds, pitching just two innings and allowed all seven runs on five hits and five walks.

Next up AIC will host St. Anselm on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
