Eighth Inning Explosion Leads Southern Connecticut Past AIC Baseball Team

New Haven, Conn. - Southern Connecticut broke open a 3-2 game with seven runs in the bottom of the eight in a 10-2 win over the American International College baseball team Tuesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Southern Connecticut. The Owls improved to 24-15 on the year and 13-6 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 9-23 overall and 7-14 in conference action. Senior David Dest (Orange, Conn.) went 1 for 3 with an RBI for AIC.

Southern Connecticut broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh when junior Mo Davidson (Winsted, Conn.) scored from second on senior Anthony Fiorillo's (Pleasant Valley, Conn.) center field single, giving the Owls a 3-2 lead.

The Yellow Jackets threatened to tie the game in the top of the eighth as senior Jeff Rustico (Southington, Conn.) and Dest reached base with two outs, but junior Brian Lazor (Hewitt, N.J.) got freshman Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) to strike out swinging to end the inning. The Owls scored loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom half of the inning and scored three runs on a walk and two singles before Fiorillo cleared the bases with a double to left center.

AIC led 1-0 after the first on Dest's RBI-single to right field and led 2-0 in the second after freshman John Shivo (Ayer, Mass.) scored on an error. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to do more damage, but stranded two runners each inning. Southern Connecticut got one of those runs back in the third and then tied the game in the fourth.

Junior Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) got the win after holding AIC to two runs on two hits with nine strikeouts, while freshman John Scanlon (Glastonbury, Conn.) took the loss after allowing in the game-winning run in the seventh. Classmate Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y.) got the start for the Yellow Jackets and held the Owls to two runs on eight hits and fanned eight in 6.2 innings.

Junior Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) finished the game 4 for 5 at the plate for with two RBIs and a run scored, while Fiorillo went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

AIC and Southern Connecticut will meet against Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at AIC Park in Springfield. The Yellow Jackets will next host Stonehill Wednesday at 3 p.m.
