SPRINGFIELD, Mass - Freshman
John Shivo (Ayer, Mass.) hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning to put the American International College baseball team past UMass Lowell 9-8 on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 9-21 overall and 7-12 in the Northeast-10, while the loss brings the River Hawks to 18-17 on the season and 13-6 in the conference. Shivo went 2 for 4 on the afternoon with two runs score and one RBI.
UMass Lowell jumped out to the early lead scoring two runs in the first inning, when junior Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) singled up the middle scoring senior Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) from third and sophomore Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) from second. Keene went 3 for 5 on the day with two RBIs, while Manton also went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Wolstenholme went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
The lead would not last for long as AIC tied the ballgame in the second inning. Junior
Mike Massery (Pittsfield, Mass.) would put the Yellow Jackets on the board when he singled to left scoring
David Dest (Orange, Conn.) from second. Freshman Luis Saunders Garfield, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield scoring
Kyle McNiff (Westford, Mass.) from third tying the game at two.
The River Hawks scored one run in the third and five runs in the sixth inning with four runs coming from Manton, when he hit a grand slam, to put UMass Lowell on top 8-6 heading into the seventh inning. Dest would lead the seventh inning off with a homerun over the left field fence. Saunders then tied the game at 8 to 8 when he singled home McNiff from third, setting the stage for Shivo's ninth inning walk off blast.
Senior
Uchon Yi (Windsor Locks, Conn.) started the game for the Yellow Jackets going five innings and allowing six earned runs. Freshman
Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) picked up the win pitching just one inning and recording one strikeout. River Hawks senior James Barry (Chelmsford, Mass.) went six innings giving up five earned runs, while sophomore Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) picked up the loss recording one out and then giving up the game winning homerun to Shivo.
Next up, the Yellow Jackets will travel to UMass Lowell on Sunday at 1p.m.
