Baseball Tops Bentley in Conference Opener 3-2

Waltham, Mass. - The American International College baseball team opened Northeast-10 play with a 3-2 victory at Bentley Tuesday afternoon to improve to 2-6 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Springfield, but unplayable field conditions resulted in the game being moved to Bentley. Graduate student Brett Cooley (Somers, Conn.) allowed two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in seven innings to pick up the win for AIC.

The Yellow Jackets led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning and nearly tied the game with two outs, but senior Joe Herzog (Cheshire, Mass.) was thrown out at the plate on a hit to left field. Freshman Herb Coggeshall (Coventry, Conn.) got the ball to classmate Dan Mooney (Bennington, Vt.), who relayed the throw to senior Jason Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) to record the final out.

Senior Jeff Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) went 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs for AIC and Jason Rustico went 1 for 4 with a RBI. Senior David Dest (Orange, Conn.), junior Mike Massery (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Coggeshall also went 2 for 4 at the plate.

Freshman Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings after entering the game with one out in the eighth inning to record the save.

The Yellow Jackets and Falcons will meet again Thursday at Bentley at 3:30 p.m.
