Yellow Jackets Fall to Rollins 2-1

Box Score

Winter Park, Fla. - Graduate Student Brett Cooley (Somers, Conn.) pitched seven innings giving up only two runs but the American International College baseball squad fell to 1-3 overall on the season after dropping a 2-1 non-conference contest to Rollins College at Alfond Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The win propels the tars to 17-16-1 on the season.

Tars senior third baseman Gene Howard singled in the bottom half of the fourth inning and eventually scored after junior Bryan Bennett cracked a two out double, giving Rollins a 1-0 advantage. The Tars earned their second run in the fifth inning after Jesse More led the inning off with a triple. More's run was again recorded with two outs, after Corey Whiting smacked a double into the gap, easily bringing him to the plate.

AIC threatened to win the game in the ninth inning. Freshman John Shivo (Ayer, Mass.) drew a walk to lead off and scooted over to third base via two wild pitches. With two outs, Dan Fey (Plymouth, Mass.), hit a sinking line drive that found some green and scored Shivo for third. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, with the tying run in scoring position Rollings closer Jason Cutlip came in and retired the final batter, ending the game.

Cooley didn't register a walk and fanned two in a tough loss. Along with Cooley's notable pitching performance, freshman Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) gave AIC one inning of scoreless ball in the eighth.

The Yellow Jackets will clash with Florida Tech tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
