Mark Pavli (Sarnia, Ont.) scored a goal and had two assists as the American International College ice hockey team downed the Bentley Falcons 5-2 in an Atlantic Hockey match-up Friday evening in West Springfield. The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-16-4 overall and 7-12-2 in the AHA while the Falcons fall to 6-15-6 overall and 6-9-6 in the conference.
AIC surpasses their total number of points from last season, while the seven regular season wins equals their sum from a year ago, with seven games still remaining on the schedule. AIC is now an even 1-1-1 against Bentley this season and 3-3-2 since falling to Robert Morris in the first week of 2008.
The Yellow Jackets, who out shot Bentley 17-6 in the first stanza, scored the game's first goal on the power-play at the 3:46 marker in the first frame.
Frankie DeAngelis (Woodbridge, Ont.) collected the puck after multiple shots on goal and hammered a slap-shot past Bentley goalie Joe Calvi's right shoulder. Pavli registered an assist on the score.
AIC opened up a three goal advantage in the second period. Just over a minute into the frame, Captain
Bryan Jurynec (Orland Park, Ill.) passed the puck right in front of the net, which hit the skate of a Bentley defender and into the goal.
Four minutes later senior
Greg Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) skated through the defense and earned a one-on-one, beating the defender and the goalie five-hole, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
The third period saw a total of four goals as each team notched a pair of scores. Pavli, who had three points on the evening scored an even-strength goal less than five minutes into the period while freshman
Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied a goal with eight minutes showing on the clock.
AIC goalie
Dan Ramirez (Rochester, N.Y.) was under three minutes away from his first career shut-out but gave up a pair of goals, one to Jay Bletzer at the 17:48 marker and one to Jeff Gumaer with only 51 ticks showing on the clock.
Ramirez stopped 20 shots in net for AIC while Calvi turned back 28 for the Falcons.
The two teams will conclude the home-in-home series tomorrow evening in Watertown, Mass.
