SETTING THE SCENE: Tonight's ice hockey contest
features the visiting Griffins of Canisius College and the
American International College Yellow Jackets
ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets enter this weekends
series with Canisius with a record of 0-4-0 on the
seasons and are 0-2-0 in the AHA after losing both of
last weekends games to Air Force. In the first game of
last weekend series AIC lost 5-2. Freshmen Nielsson
Arcibal and
Michael Penny recorded their first collegiate
points. The Falcons got on the board first though,
scored two early goals in the first period. Penny the put
the Yellow Jackets on the board netting his first collegiate
goal with assists from junior
Mike McMillan and
Arcibal. Acribal then tied the game at 2-2, when he
found the back of the net for his first time as a college
athlete. He recieved assists from Penny and senior
Chad Richardson. But Air Force would take over in the
third period scoring three times, one of which was an
empty net goal, to win 5-2. Sophomore
Dan Ramirez
made 39 saves in the loss. In the second game of the
weekend series on Saturday, the Falcons recorded a 3-
1 victory over AIC. Air Force, again, jumped out to an
early lead scoring just minutes into the first period. They
would add two more in the second, both of which were
on the power play, to make the game 3-0 heading into
the third period. With 28-seconds left in the final period
Richardson found the back of the net to break up the
shutout, with assists from junior
Frankie DeAngelis and
sophomore
Steve McLeod. Senior goaltender Tom
Fenton stopped 28 shots in the 3-1 loss. Four Yellow
Jackets are tied for the team lead in scoring with two
points each, Arcibal, Penny, and Richardson each
have a goal and an assist, while McLeod has two
assists.
ABOUT CANISIUS: The Griffins come into this
weekends series with AIC with a record of 1-2-2 on the
year and are 0-1-1 in the conference after earning a 1-1
tie with Merrimack on Sunday. The Warriors jumped out to an
early 1-0 lead scoring just over 3 minutes into the first
period.The 1-0 lead would last until the third period when
junior Carl Hudson tied the game for Canisius, scoring
one minute into the period with assists from sophomore
Cory Conacher and junior Josh Heidinger. Junior
netminder Andrew Loewen stopped 29 pucks to earn
the tie. Conacher leads the Griffins in scoring with four
goals and three assists for seven points on the season,
while Hudson is right behind him with three goals and
three assists for six points thus far.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET: The Yellow Jackets
recorded the sweep of the weekend series on October
16 and 17, 2007. In the first game on the 16th, AIC beat
Canisius 3-1. Scoring didn't start until the second period,
when McMillan put the first goal of the game in the back
of the net with assists from
Bryan Jurynec, and
McLeod. McLeod then scored his own goal to give AIC
a 2-0 lead. Heidinger made the game 2-1 when he put
the puck past Ramirez.
Jereme Tendler gave the Yellow
Jackets a 3-1 victory when he scored the games final
goal. Ramirez made 22 saves in the win. In the second
game AIC earned a 4-2 win, recieving two goals from
McMillan. DeAngelis and T.J. Smith each added a goal
for the Yellow Jackets, while Hedidinger and Derek
Danowski scroed for the Griffins.
