No. 19/22 Football Travels To Assumption Saturday for NE-10 Showdown

SETTING THE SCENE: The American International College football team looks to extend its school-record winning streak to 14 games and improve to 8-0 on the season when it takes on Assumption Saturday at Multi-Sport Stadium.

ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets enter today's contest with an overall record of 7-0 and are 5-0 in the Northeast-10 after routing Pace, 42-20, last Saturday. Sophomore quarterback Rob Parent has completed 106-of-166 (63.9 pct.) passes this season for 1,514 yards and 23 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Travis Poole leads the team with 44 catches, 823 yards and 12 TDs and junior wide receiver Kertis Hussey ranks second with 31 catches for 469 yards 10 touchdowns. Freshman running back Mike Mayo has carried the ball 100 times for 644 yards and four touchdowns since making his debut against Husson four games ago. Junior linebacker Rich Reichert leads the team with 48 tackles (19 solo, 29 ast.) and is third with seven tackles for loss. Classmate Nick Abraham ranks second on the team with 39 tackles (20 solo, 19 ast.), leads the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and is second with four sacks. Senior place kicker Marek Przybylek has converted 5-of-6 field goals and has converted 32-of-33 PATs on the season.

AIC'S LAST TIME OUT: AIC improved to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 after defeating visiting Pace University, 42-20, Saturday afternoon at John Homer Miller Field. The win extends the Yellow Jackets school-record winning streak to 13 games and its school-record home winning streak to 14 games. Hussey had three touchdowns on the day for AIC. Parent completed 13-of-23 passes for 156 and four touchdowns and Mayo carried the ball 24 times for a game-high 128 yards. Poole caught seven passes for a game-high 106 yards and had one score and Hussey recorded three catches for 42 yards and two receiving TDs. He also had a punt return for a touchdown. AIC's defense held the Setters to just 221 yards of total offense and limited their rushing attack to just 10 net yards on 22 carries. Abraham led the way with 6.5 tackles, five solo, with two sacks and three tackles for loss. Junior defensive back Mike Szawlowski also had five solo tackles and assisted on another. Reichert had 3.5 tackles and had one of the Yellow Jackets' two interceptions. Junior DB Brian Kelly had three tackles, two solo, and one interception.

CLAIMING THE CROWN: With a win today, AIC would clich at least a share of the 2008 Northeast-10 championship. It would be the Yellow Jackets' first conference title since 2000 when they played under the banner of the Eastern Football Conference, which was absorbed into the NE-10 in 2001. AIC also won the EFC title in 1999.

ABOUT ASSUMPTION: The Greyhounds enter today's contest with a record of 1-6 overall and are 1-4 in the NE-10 after getting blown out at Stonehill, 31-7, last week. Sophomore quarterback Josh Ratacik (Manchester, N.H.) has completed 110-of-188 passes for 1,071 yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Dominique Price (Worcester, Mass.) leads the team with 39 receptions and 480 yards and is second with three touchdowns and senior wide out Joey Fabiano (Westwood, Mass.) ranks second with 38 catches for 318 yards and leads the team with five TDs. Herbert Woodard has 120 carries for 486 yards and six touchdowns. Senior defensive back Chris Martino (Lincroft, N.J.) leads the team with 65 tackles, including a team-best 37 solo tackles. Junior linebacker Dustin Zitzmann (Pinellas Park, Fla.) is second on the team with 56 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Sophomore defensive back Keith Bates (Holden, Mass.) had 51 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. Freshman place kicker Zack Okolowitcz (Cranston, R.I.) has made just 1-of-3 field goal attempts and has converted 12-of-16 PATs.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. ASSUMPTION: The Yellow Jackets hold a 10-1-0 advantage in the all-time series with the Greyhounds and hav won each of the last five contests, including a 28-7 victory last season. The two team first met on October 4, 1997, with AIC posting a dominant 41-9 win at Assumption. The Greyhounds only win in the series was back on October 12, 2002 when they pulled out a 10-9 win at home. The Yellow Jackets have shutout Assumption twice, first on October 10, 1998 (43-0) and then on October 25, 2005 (37-0). Both shutouts were at John Homer Miller Field.

ON A ROLL: The win over Pace was AIC's school-record 13th in a row, a streak that began with a 44-21 win over Merrimack on October 6, 2007. The win was also the Yellow Jackets' school-record 14th straight home victory at John Homer Miller Field, which dates back to November 5, 2005 when AIC recorded a 51-28 win over Saint Anselm. A win today would also tie the school-record for consecutive wins to open a season in program history. The 1975 squad also opened the year with a school-record eight consecutive victories.

AIC IN THE POLLS: The Yellow Jackets advanced five positions in this week's American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Coaches Poll and is making its first appearance of the season in the D2Football.com media poll. The Yellow Jackets are ranked 19th in the AFCA Coaches' Poll and 22nd in the D2Football.com poll after routing Pace Saturday, 42-20, which improved their record to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Northeast-10. AIC, which is the only NE-10 team in the top-25 or receiving votes this week in either poll, was ranked 24th in the AFCA poll had been receiving votes in each of the last previous two polls. The Yellow Jackets also moved from fifth to third in the latest NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.

WEEKLY HONORS: Junior wide receiver Kertis Hussey was named the Northeast-10 and ECAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets' 42-20 win over Pace last Saturday. Hussey had a combined 161 yards and three touchdowns; catching three passes for 42 yards and two receiving touchdowns and racking up 119 kick/punt return yards, including a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Rob Parent and freshman running back Mike Mayo were named the to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll. Mayo carried the ball 24 times for a game-high 128 yards, helping setup each of AIC's four offensive touchdowns. Parent completed 13-of-23 passes for 156 yards and four touchdowns with scoring passes of two, 17, seven and two yards, respectively.
