Box Score
Hanover, N.H. - Freshman
Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.), sophomore
Chris Campanale (Chester Springs, Pa.) and senior
Greg Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) all scored as the American International College ice hockey team played to a 3-3 tie against ECAC rival Dartmouth Sunday evening in the Thompson Arena. The tie moves the Yellow Jackets record to 5-15-4 overall on the season while the Big Green go to 8-9-2.
In a thrilling contest, the Yellow Jackets held a 3-2 lead late in the third period but gave up a goal to Jon Grecu with one second on the clock, sending the game into overtime. AIC is now 0-1-2 against ECAC teams having played to a 1-1 tie against then nationally ranked RPI, while dropping a 3-2 decision to USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine's No.12 ranked team the Quinnipiac Bobcats.
The Yellow Jackets tallied the contest's first score less than two minutes into the opening frame. Mele scored his fourth goal of the year finishing a
David Turco (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) slap-shot that fell in front of the net after initially being blocked by Big Green goalie Joe Grossman.
Turco and Campanale both registered an assist on the score. Dartmouth answered right back two minutes later when Josh Gilliam finished off a flurry of shot attempts on Jacket goalie
Dan Ramirez (Rochester, N.Y.), posting the game's second score not even five minutes into the contest.
In the second stanza, Dartmouth used a power-play goal from Grecu with 2:41 showing on the clock to gain a 2-1 lead.
Ramirez, who played well in the third, made a simply phenomenal save three minutes into the final period, sprawling out to stone what appeared to be a sure goal off of the stick of Big Green forward Scott Fleming. Three minutes after the effort, Campanale earned his second point of the game pulling up on a two-on-one breakaway and striking a quick wrist-shot past Grossman's right shoulder. The unassisted goal was Campanale's fifth of the year to tie the game at two.
With 1:58 showing on the clock in the third period Genovese slipped a shot through Grossman while being pressured heavily by a Big Green defender. The goal was Genovese's fourth goal of the season.
Dartmouth answered back at the last possible moment, when Grecu scored his second goal of the contest with only one second on the clock, pushing the game into overtime.
Ramirez ended the night with his most impressive collegiate performance, stopping 36 shots on goal.
For AIC, it was the final contest played out of conference, as their ten remaining opponents all come from the Atlantic Hockey Association. Next up, they hit the road for a weekend series with RIT.
