SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Despite a 14 point 10 rebound effort from junior
Colson Senat, the American International College men's hoops team dropped a 73-69 battle to St. Anselm College in a Northeast-10 showdown Saturday afternoon. The win propels the Hawks to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the Northeast-10 while the loss drops AIC to 7-10 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
The Yellow Jackets held a 31-27 lead at halftime but fell victim to clutch foul shots and 42.9 percent three-point shooting in the second stanza from the Hawks, leading to their third straight loss.
Jeff Dosado who scored 16 points drained a jump shot with 2:50 showing on the clock, making the score 61-60 in favor of St. Anselm. Thomas Baudinet who was huge down the stretch for the Hawks came down and buried a three-pointer. Dosado quickly tried to match the clasp shooting but miss fired from downtown.
The Hawks added two more shots from the foul line giving them a six point edge with 40 seconds remaining. In the winning effort, John Tello scored a team-best 18 points while Baudinet added 15 for the Hawks.
After
Lucius Millinder missed a three-point attempt Senat brought down the rebound and powered his way to a lay-up with a foul. After knocking the free-bee, AIC fouled, allowing Greg Vetramo to knock down one-of-two foul shots giving the Hawks a four point edge. Millinder ripped down the rebound from the second foul shot, and tossed it up to Dosado who drove to the hole and dished the ball to
Aikeem Vanderhorst who capitalized by making the easy lay-up. Vanderhorst led the team with 17 points.
Following another pair of foul shots from Baudiner, Dosado raced down the court and scored again keeping the game within one possession. Despite the valiant effort for the Yellow Jackets, Vetrano, who was fouled, knocked down two more foul-shots with only one second on the clock, leading to the eventual triumph for the Hawks.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action when they host UMass-Lowell Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm.
