Yellow Jackets Fall in Overtime at Sacred Heart

Box Score

Milford, Conn. - Sacred Heart junior Bear Trapp scored a goal two minutes into overtime propelling the Pioneers to a 5-4 overtime victory over the American International College ice hockey squad in an Atlantic Hockey match-up Friday evening at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The win moves Sacred Heart to 8-9-2 overall and 8-3-2 in the conference while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-14-2 overall and 5-10-1 in the AHA.

For AIC it was their first loss in overtime, earning a pair of ties in extra frame action earlier on the season. Jereme Tendler (Viceroy, Sask.), Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.), David Turco (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Steve McLeod (Atikokan, Ont.) all scored while AIC goalie Dan Ramirez (Rochester, N.Y.) stopped 39 shots in net in the losing effort for the Yellow Jackets.

Both teams posted a score in the first-period, the first of which came off the stick of Pioneer first-line center Dave Jarman, who found the puck lingering between Ramirez's legs and helped push it across the crease.

The Yellow Jackets nodded the scored at one after gaining a five-on-three advantage midway through the period. McLeod garnered his fifth goal of the season; knocking home a rebound after senior defensemen Chris Bolognino (Carol Stream, Ill.) ripped a slap-shot from the point. Bolognino and sophomore Mike McMillan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) both earned assists on the goal.

Sacred Heart, who fell behind 2-1 early in the period following Turco's second goal of the second season scored three times in the second frame, accumulating a 4-2 lead going into the second intermission.

The Pioneers used Jarman's second goal along with Nick Johnson and Alexandre Parent scores to go on top. Johnson's goal came after the Pioneer's went on a two-man advantage at the 10:58 marker.

The Yellow Jackets came out of the second break with renewed energy. AIC, having been outshot 22-8 in the second period, quickly tied the game at four.

Tendler earned his seventh goal of the season after skating coast-to-coast and flicking home a power-play goal in the initial stage of the final period. Mele - who has played well since scoring his first goal last Friday against Robert Morris - tied the game at four, backhanding the puck home after taking a centering feed from sophomore Chris Campanale (Chester Springs, Pa.) with just over 10 minutes to play in the stanza.

Following the Yellow Jackets two goal effort in the third period, the game went into overtime. In overtime Sacred Heart's Bear Trapp smacked home a rebound helping the Pioneer's earn the 5-4 victory.

Stefan Drew turned away 29 in net for Sacred Heart.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:05 pm.
