Eric Olsen was named head men's rugby coach in August 2025.
Olsen most recently coached at Framingham State University from 2012-2023, leading the men's program in both 15s and 7s seasons. He led the Rams to three straight league championships in 2015 through 2017, earning promotions twice, and in the 2017 campaign his team allowed just 15 points in 10 matches.Â
In addition to the on-field success, Olsen developed a staff of three assistant coaches, created an off-season training program to enhance fitness and reduce injuries, and instituted head-injury assessment protocols long before those were required. Â
His leadership skills led him to be nominated by the University's women's rugby program to be the institutional Title IX representative.Â
Additionally, Olsen was the founder and head coach of the Middlesex Youth Rugby Club, the first U-19 club program in Massachusetts; the team won four New England Youth Championships. He helped lead the charge to have rugby recognized officially by the state – the first state in the country to do so.Â
He was the head coach and technical coach at Harvard University from 2001-2005, reaching the national finals in 2003 and coaching three All-Americans as well as one player who went on to play for the US National Team. Â
Beyond his coaching experience, Olsen has tremendous administrative experience. He served as the Executive Director of Universities for the New England Rugby Football Union from 2018-2019, where he was responsible for oversight of three leagues and 38 institutions in New England, including scheduling and compliance. He also managed the Northeast USA Territorial Select Side from 1998-2000, comprised of over 200 teams at four different levels, directing 16 coaches and eight support staff members.Â
As a player, Olsen enjoyed a 20-year career that included playing in London from 1974-1981 and captaining several US military teams, including the US Military Forces Europe team from 1984-1987 and the US Army Rugby Team from 1984-1992.Â
He is a USA Rugby Level 300 certified coach.Â
