HOOKSETT, New Hampshire - The American International College softball team lost both halves of a doubleheader at Northeast 10 Conference opponent Southern New Hampshire University, dropping a 2-0 game-one decision before falling 6-5 in 11 frames in the second game on Saturday, April 18.
AIC is now 12-24 overall and 6-12 in the NE10.
The Penmen scored the first run of the opening game on a fielding error in the fourth after a pair of two-out singles. They added another run in the fourth, this time earned thanks to a pair of doubles. AIC managed two hits in the seventh, but did not score.
Southern New Hampshire then jumped on AIC with three in the first of game two, with three singles and an error accounting for the runs. The Yellow Jackets began battling back in the third, led by their senior co-captain
Julia Krijgsman, who walked, advanced on two groundouts, and came home on a wild pitch.
The team then tied the game in the fourth.
Nevaeh Trejo and
Morgan Bemont both singled to lead off, and an error at first loaded the bases.
Brooklyn Cividanes then singled to score Trejo, and an error in right field brought Bemont in.
Once again, the bats went cold for both sides, through regulation and into extras. AIC left runners in the eighth, but in the ninth, a
Lauryn Ramalho hit by pitch,
Brianna Salazar single, and
Jilien Ayala groundout scored
Macey Burns, who was placed at second to start the frame. However, the Penmen tied the game in their half with a sacrifice fly.
Both teams also scored in the tenth. Trejo was the placed runner, and came in on a groundout and a Burns single. The Penmen responded, with a groundout, walk, and single to tie the game yet again.
AIC was held off the board in the 11th, and the Penmen were able to walk it off wtih a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.
The Yellow Jackets return home to face defending NE10 and East Region Champion Pace University for a pair on Wednesday, April 22 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
