Adelphi upends women's basketball in regular season finale

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's basketball team fell 68-57 to Adelphi University in the Northeast 10 Conference and regular season finale for both teams.

AIC ends the regular season at 16-10 with a 10-8 NE10 mark, good four fourth in the conference.

Keyvanna Bennett started AIC on a 4-0 run, but the Panthers stormed back with eight straight before Alicia Aznar Chamorro knocked a shot down. Ahliya Phillips put AIC back on top shortly after with a three, then swiped the ball away and laid in two more, giving the home side a 13-10 lead after one.

The lead changed hands five times in the first five minutes of the second before Bennett went on a six-point surge. Ruzgar Christina Boyle hit a three that briefly gave AIC its biggest lead of the game, seven, before the Panthers pulled back within four before the end of the quarter. AIC went into the locker room up 30-26.

Adelphi surged out of the stoppage and regained the lead as the teams continued to score and swing the advantage back and forth. Adelphi was able to get ahead by five with 2:22 to play in the frame, but AIC closed the gap again to within two with 20 seconds left. A foul then sent AIC to the line, and Adelphi was additionally assessed a technical foul on the play. Chelsea Reeves hit all four free throws, and Peyton Grant hit a last-second layup that pushed AIC in front 49-45.

As much as the six-point swing shocked the Panthers, it also irritated them, and with their entire season on the line, they locked in, going on a 12-point run to regain control of the game, this time for good. Ultimately, the Panthers outscored AIC 23-8 in the quarter to win 68-57, and in the process secured the seventh and final NE10 Tournament berth.

Reeves and Bennett led AIC's offense with 18 and 17 points; Reeves grabbed seven boards to lead AIC as well.

AIC, as the fourth seed, will host fifth-seeded Saint Michael's College in the NE10 Championship First Round, presented by Visit Central Florida, on Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m.
