MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The American International College women's basketball team had five different players in double figures in a 67-52 win at Saint Anselm College in Northeast 10 Conference play on Saturday, January 24.
AIC is now 12-6 overall and 6-4 in the NE10.
Right out of the gate, AIC took charge of the game with
Eden Monka scoring the first basket.
Keyvanna Bennett and
Chelsea Reeves also factored into the early run, with Reeves then setting up
Tia-Marie Martinez for a three to push AIC to a 10-0 lead and force a Hawks timeout less than four minutes in. Saint Anselm did break the run on the next possession, but AIC continued to make shots, including
Sarai Gurley dropping in a three from Martinez to have AIC up 22-9 after one.
The offenses slowed in the second; both teams scored just 10 points and neither team made a shot from beyond the arc. Monka continued to lead AIC's offense, scoring six points in the quarter, with four at the line, and AIC had a 32-19 advantage at halftime.
Monka, Bennett, and Martinez all made shots early in the third, with the latter from deep, and Gurley also hit a triple to help keep the Hawks down by double digits. Heading into the final frame, AIC led comfortably, 46-32.
Fouls began piling up for the Hawks in the fourth, as Reeves sank four free throws early, and AIC built its lead up to as much as 19 with 4:15 to go after Bennett drew and made two more at the line. The Hawks rallied late, cutting that gap to nine, but had to stop AIC from scoring by fouling, and the eight more at the line in the final 1:35 accounted for the 67-52 final.
Bennett led AIC with 15 points, while Reeves scored 14, Monka 11, and Martinez and Gurley each had 10. Monka narrowly missed her first double-double of the season, grabbing nine boards to lead the game.Â
AIC next travels to Pace University on Tuesday, January 27 for a 5:30 p.m. NE10 game.
