DOBBS FERRY, New York - In the team's first games north of the Mason-Dixon line in 2025, the American International College softball team earned a split with Mercy University, winning 8-1 and falling 7-1 on Saturday, March 22.
AIC is now 4-6 on the season.
Julia Krijgsman was the story in game one, as both teams struggled to find offense. She held the Mavericks to one baserunner through four frames, and that came on a fielding error.
In the fifth, AIC finally began to hit. Morgan Bemont started it off with a single, and Brianna Salazar followed with a bunt base hit. Two batters later, Destiny McGrath smacked a two-run double to left. Krijgsman then singled, as did Sammy Sanchez, the latter bringing home McGrath. Brooklyn Cividanes then broke the game wide open, hammering a hanging pitch over the left-field fence for a three-run shot and a 6-0 lead. Mercy scored one unearned run in the bottom half, leaving AIC ahead late in the game.
In the sixth, the trio of Bemont, Salazar, and McGrath combined for two more; after the first two both singled to get on, McGrath drove them in with another base knock, putting away the 8-1 final.
In game two, McGrath drove in the first run to open the scoring for AIC; Lauryn Ramalho led off with a single and swiped second before coming home on McGrath's hit to center. However, the Mavericks tied the game in the bottom of the first, and scored four in the fourth and two in the sixth to win the contest, 7-1.
Krijgsman's line in the first game was stellar; she allowed the one hit and one walk, with no earned runs and seven strikeouts in the complete-game victory. McGrath totaled five hits and five RBI on the afternoon, while Salazar recorded her first collegiate multi-hit game.
The Yellow Jackets will open Northeast-10 Conference play Wednesday, March 26 at Southern New Hampshire University for a pair, with game one beginning at 2:00 p.m.
