WATERBURY, Connecticut - Down by double digits early on, the American International College women's basketball team forced overtime but ultimately lost, 81-79, at Post University on Sunday, November 30.
AIC is now 5-1 on the season and remains 1-0 in the Northeast 10 Conference.
The Eagles scored 14 points before AIC's first field goal came nearly seven minutes in, although the Yellow Jackets did make five free throws in that span.
Chelsea Reeves knocked down a three, but the Eagles continued to stack points, and despite a
Peyton Grant triple, AIC trailed 21-11 after one. Post shot 50.0 percent from the floor to AIC's 11.8 percent, which included no makes other than free throws from inside the arc.
Keyvanna Bennett and Alyssa Rossignol traded a pair of makes early in the second, but Post expanded its lead to 15 before AIC went on its first real run;
Ruzgar Christina Boyle made two shots and Reeves sank a three to pull AIC within 30-22. After a post field goal, AIC went on another hot streak, and it was all Bennett, with eight straight points down the stretch in a 1:50 span. Shockingly, after trailing 30-15, AIC went to the locker room down just 32-30.Â
Post added to its lead with the first five points of the third, but AIC quickly countered as
Tia-Marie Martinez drained a three and then Boyle swiped the ball to send Bennett in on a breakaway. That set up a back-and-forth where AIC took the lead on two different occasions, only for Post to regain the advantage; ultimately, Post took a five-point edge into the final regular break thanks to free throws down the stretch.
Boyle knocked a three down to open the fourth, but Post started pulling away, and led by eight with 6:03 to play. That held through the next three minutes before
Sarai Gurley put home a three, and AIC chipped away at the advantage, making it a one-possession game in the final minute. Once more, AIC's captain stepped up, as Martinez delivered a three with 12 seconds in regulation that re-tied the game, 71-71, and AIC was able to get a takeaway to force overtime.
In the OT, AIC built a quick lead as Boyle sank an early and-one, and Reeves followed with a three. However, AIC was outscored 10-2 over the final 2:55 as the Eagles knocked in a game-winning putback to take the 81-79 victory.
Bennett led AIC with 22 points, while Martinez notched 14 and Reeves and Boyle each scored 12. Bennett also snared nine boards and four swipes, while Reeves dished nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
AIC next returns to NE10 play at Adelphi University on Wednesday, December 3 at 5:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
