Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Reeves' big showing not enough for Women's Basketball against Saint Anselm

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Chelsea Reeves led the American International College women's basketball team with 23 points, but the Yellow Jackets fell 62-55 to Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm College on Saturday, January 25.

AIC is now 10-10 with a 3-9 NE10 mark.

Reeves opened the scoring with the game's first two field goals, but the Hawks hit three first-quarter triples to take the lead before Reeves tied it up with a deep shot of her own. Late free throws gave Saint Anselm a 14-12 advantage after one quarter.

In the second, Ahilya Phillips and Ruzgar Christina Boyle connected from deep to put AIC in front, and though the Hawks briefly regained an advantage, Peyton Grant found the hoop from range for a 26-23 edge. Once again, the Hawks sank a pair from the line in the waning seconds of the period, leaving AIC a 26-25 lead at the midpoint.

Reeves started the second half with a bang, connecting a layup through contact and finishing the old school three. However, 11 of the next 13 points belonged to the Hawks to build a sizeable advantage. AIC was able to close the gap to 40-38 thanks to a five-point run, but the Hawks netted one of their own, and for a third time hit two from the stripe in the final 10 seconds of the stanza to lead 47-40.

AIC made a strong push in the fourth, cutting the lead to four with 2:46 to play on a Keyvanna Bennett layup, but the Hawks buckled down and held the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard from there to hang on to the win.

Reeves' 23 total points marks the third time in five games she has scored 20 or more and the fifth time this season. Bennett notched eight points and grabbed eight boards, while Rhaymi Porter snagged nine rebounds to lead the game.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday, January 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Saint Michael's College.
