BOYDS, Maryland - The American International College women's rugby team finished fourth at the 2024 Collegiate Rugby Championship National 7s Tournament held April 27-28, improving their standing by one spot from a season ago.
On the first day of play, AIC made quick work of its opposition. Sara Doyle, Venise Sanft, and Morgan Schechter all scored tries and Camryn Henderson kicked two conversions as the Yellow Jackets dispatched Mount St. Mary's 19-5.
AIC's next task was to battle Bowdoin. The Yellow Jackets and Polar Bears battled, but thanks to tries by Aifric Ni Ghibne and Ro'Elenoa Lagilagi, as well as a Henderson conversion, AIC punched a ticket to the semifinals, winning 12-5.
The Yellow Jackets drew Army West Point as their semifinal opposition, and despite Talimaia Fualaau and SaTya Miller tries and a Zahira Roldan conversion, the Black Knights snuck past AIC thanks to three tries for a 15-12 final.
AIC faced Navy in the third-place match, and though Miller and Ivana Kiripati both connected for tries, the Yellow Jackets suffered a heartbreaker, with Navy scoring a try and conversion in the waning seconds for a 14-10 win, leaving the Yellow Jackets in fourth.
Despite the setback in the finale, AIC still improved from 2023, where the team finished fifth of the 16 teams.
