Bentley sneaks past softball for sweep

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Northeast-10 Conference-leading Bentley University, 9-3 and 5-4, on Tuesday, April 12.

AIC is now 4-28 overall and 1-11 in the NE10.

Bentley opened the series with a big first inning, collecting four unearned runs in the opening frame, and then Jordan Krause tacked on two more with a second-inning home run. In the fourth, AIC broke its shutout, as Abigail Wells walked, and Victoria Andrade doubled to drive her in.

AIC added another two in the sixth, as Laila Cofone led off with a walk, and Mackenzie Berman then doubled. Alexis Jimenez singled to push Cofone home, and Brianna Harzula was hit by a pitch. Jimenez swiped third, and came home when Kodi Gora lined a single off of the pitcher that deflected into foul territory off of first base. However, the Falcons pushed three across in the seventh to put the game out of reach and win 9-3.

Bentley pushed a run across in the opening stanza of game one, although Riley Sullivan was able to limit it to that after the Falcons loaded the bases with one out.

In the third, AIC's offense came alive. Leah Twyman smacked a base hit through the left side, and Lily Acampora's grounder to short was thrown into right field, allowing Twyman to take third. Acampora then stole second, and both came home when Mackenzie Berman doubled into the right-center gap. Andrade added a single to push Berman home and AIC led 3-1.

In the fifth, AIC extended that lead by a run, as Wells led off and crushed a home run well over the left-field fence, giving AIC a 4-1 advantage.

The Falcons were down to just three outs when their bats came alive, as they put together five straight hits to score four runs, stealing the lead back. Wells led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, but AIC could not bring her home, ending the game with her at third base.

The Yellow Jackets continue NE10 play on Saturday, April 15 at noon for the first game of a doubleheader with Le Moyne College.
